If you purchase a product at £100 they'll replace it like for like, no questions asked.
But if said product is not longer sold, as with
many tech product they tend to change yearly and they can't fix your £100 product you purchased with addition insurance they'll replace it, yes, but you'll still be liable for the difference, if the replacement cost £300, you have to pay £200 (plus that insurance you paid them upfront or monthly).
So it's not really like for like, it's just coving the cost of the original product you purchased (the £100, not really against getting you a product of the same type).
So just be careful, and ask will you get another iPod without paying additional if they no longer sell your anymore? The answer only if it costs the same amount, otherwise no.
